11 Types of Cedar Trees in Every State: Pictures (Map & Chart)

Tall types of cedar trees planted in a grove with green cedar needles and overhanging cedar branches.

Cedar trees are not native to the United States, originally hailing from the Mediterranean and regions in the Himalayas, yet at least 11 types of cedar trees in every state grow prolifically.

These statuesque, evergreen conifers grow to heights of over 200 feet, with widths of 40-80 feet, and also feature unique smells and individual traits that set them all apart from each other. Conversely, some species barely reach knee height.

As cedar trees were cultivated, there are now many types throughout the world.

This comprehensive guide outlines 11 types of cedar trees, but also introduces many others that flourish around the country.

Different Types of Cedar Trees and the Types of Cedar Trees for Landscaping

Have you wondered how many trees are in the United States? Over the last few decades, the types of cedar trees that have been cultivated from the true cedars has been astounding which make you wonder how many trees are in the world.

As far as “cedars,” the big four can be characterized by heights of up to 200 feet, their long needles, and their thick trunks.

But, other cedars have been modified in myriads of ways that have changed their colors, height, leaves, and bark to make some of them ideal for landscaping. Here are a few examples:

1. Golden Himalayan Cedar

(Cedrus deodara ‘Aurea’)

  • Height: 25-40 Feet
  • Width: 15-30 Feet
  • Hardiness Zone: 6-9

The dense foliage hangs lazily toward the ground with light-green needles that have shades of yellow running through them. It has a very shaggy, conical shape as if it could always do with a quick trim.

2. Atlas Cedar

(Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca’)

  • Height: 40-60 Feet
  • Width: 15-30 Feet
  • Hardiness Zone: 6-9

If anything, this cedar could be described as the skinny relative. A bony trunk supports spindly branches that will add some wood as they grow. But the striking silver-blue needles make up for its youthful appearance, and it will definitely grow on you.1

3. ‘Golden Horizon’ Deodar Cedar

(Cedar deodar ‘Golden Horizon’)

Height: 5-10 Feet
Width: 6-10 Feet
Hardiness Zone: 6-9

The interesting feature about this cedar, apart from its diminutive stature, are the leaves that turn a captivating golden hue in summer from its broad base to its pyramidal tip.

4. Blue Atlas Cedar

(Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca Pendula’)

Height: 3-12 Feet
Width: 3-10 Feet
Hardiness Zone: 6-9

It seems that the weight of the world is constantly pushing down on the branches, giving this cedar a constantly weeping appearance. But a keen gardener can utilize this malleable species to drape around arches, and over fences to create an impressive garden.

5. ‘Feelin’ Blue’ Deodar Cedar

(Cedrus deodara ‘Feelin’ Blue’)

Height: 1-3 Feet
Width: 6-10 Feet
Hardiness Zone: 6-9

Outstanding is an understatement when describing this little cedar. Include this in your landscaping project and its aquamarine hue will almost glow as it hugs the ground, cuddles some rocks, or forms a hedge around your garden.

6. Kenwith Cyprian Cedar

(Cedrus brevifolia ‘Kenwith’)

Height: 45 Centimeters
Width: 12 Centimeters
Hardiness Zone: 6-8

Ten years is how long it takes before this particular cedar hits its max height of 45 cm. Because of this, it is often used decoratively alongside paths to add that nice touch of fuzzy green needles.

What Type of Cedar Tree Grows Well in Dry Areas?

Have you ever wondered what state has the most trees? Different states have a wide variety of cedar tree species. The Cypress tree and the Lone Star State have their fair share of cedars, but they do need to be particularly hardy to survive there.

A red cedar tree emerges with a mix of green needles and bare branches, set against the robust trunk of another cedar in a forest.

7. Mountain Red Cedar
8. Red Cedar
9. Drooping Cedar
10. Oakbark Cedar
11. Rock Cedar

These trees can be one of the options for tree planting offset for people that care about the environment. The best carbon offset programs are available for you to select based on your interests. However, try the ecological footprint quiz to identify your personal carbon footprint first.

Where Do Cedar Trees Grow? (Pacific Northwest Cedars)

Cedar trees are native to Asia, Lebanon, and the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, and these types of cedar trees are classed as the ‘true’ cedars. From these, hundreds of ‘false’ cedars have been cultivated to grow in the United States.

This is noticeable in the Pacific Northwest, where the four species of cedars there are carbon copies of the originals but with smaller cones, smaller foliage, and with a bark that has a faint aromatic aroma to it.

In this region, the Alaska Cedar is the most popular and can be seen for miles undulating with the mountains and hills.

What Kind of Cedar Tree Do I Have?

Depending solely on the height to distinguish one type of cedar tree from another isn’t your only option.2 The color, length, and even the soft, feathery feel of the leaves help with identification and, if the color changes with the seasons, even better.

The texture of the bark, whether smooth gray or a dark, creased brown will help in assessing what kind of cedar tree you have. And another telltale sign is if, as the tree matures, the trunk actually separates into more than one base.

The cones are also a dead giveaway, indicating types of evergreen trees. Some of them are like small berries, others long, some short and fat, in colors from brown, green, light blue, or even to a rich purple.

Consider how this tree enhances the beauty of your surroundings. This is one of the benefits of planting trees. Nevertheless, caring for them can be a lot of work. Some people might even be concerned about the expense of trimming, but this should be the least of your worries because you can use a tree trimming cost calculator to get an estimate.

With all this accumulated information, you’ll soon be impressing your friends with your knowledge of all things cedar.

Cedars are an incredible species, and the types of cedar trees in every state listed here are just a small sample to choose from that will add color, style, and a certain flair to your lawn.3
