Nebraska Net Metering as One of the Nebraska Solar Incentives

Did you know that all the electric utilities in Nebraska are public? It is the only state in the country with that special aspect by the way, but there is one problem, it doesn’t have a Renewable Portfolio Standard.

This makes it a bit harder for the solar market in the region to grow as it is supposed to and maybe improve the state’s solar ranking.

The good news is that there is Nebraska net energy metering (NEM), all thanks to the NEM regulations. It all started in 2009 when the state put in place regulations to mandate net metering and provision of interconnections for renewable energy as long as they were 25 kW or lower in capacity.

Since many homes usually have a 10 kW capacity, it means that virtually everyone is eligible for NEM.

There is only one challenge with the LB 436 passing.17 Despite the strong support by the state, there were no set standards for how much the compensation was going to be, as a result, the utilities providing NEM are free to offer lower rates in comparison to the normal retail charges that are available in other states.

Various utility companies have set their own rates, and it is up to you to find which services are more attractive. They also each have their rules and regulations depending on the peak hours, annual billing cycles and other factors.

As long as there are no strong RPSs, the customers will have to make do with the current rates, hoping that the legislation will someday change in their favor.

Nebraska RPS Vs. Nebraska Solar Incentives

Take a look at the top states for solar, how strong their RPS is, and how much they have focused on incentivizing the solar industry.

You will realize that they are way ahead of the pack and have a lot of people already converted to renewable energy. Now come to Nebraska.

It doesn’t have Renewable Portfolio Standards and that is sadly why it gets quite hard to make progress and climb up the solar ranks.7 This regulation is a key determinant of a state’s dedication to embracing renewable energy.

One of the rules is that the utilities in the region are supposed to meet particular quotas, ensuring that a percentage of their power comes entirely from renewable sources, like solar, wind energy, geothermal, and biomass.
