Solar farming takes a toll on the ecosystem where it is built. Moreover, when placed in desert areas, the ground cover of panels can have negative climate impacts.

There is a chance, if you live in California, your home is being powered by a solar farm. This state is literally home to some of the mammoth solar farms in the country and the world.

In fact, the largest solar farm in USA comes from California. Altogether, the three largest solar farms in the US, found in California, produce enough power to supply half a million homes.

Here are the six largest solar farms in the United States:

Solar Star

The Solar Star solar farm started working in June 2015. Solar Star is the largest solar farm in USA and one of the biggest in the world.4

This plant boasts 1.7 million solar panels distributed across 13 square kilometers in Los Angeles and Kern counties in California. The farm was built in two projects; Solar Star 1 with a capacity of 314MW and solar star 2 with a capacity of 265MW.

The whole farm’s energy generation is about 579MW, enough to power 255,000 homes. The panels in the farm use a single-axis tracker to follow the sun’s trajectory, meaning they create 25% more energy than panels in a fixed position.

At all points, they are at the best angle for the solar panels.

The Roadrunner

The road runner is the second-largest solar farm in USA. This solar park is found in Upton County, Texas. It’s a 497 MW capacity solar project that was launched in two phases.

The first phase started its operation in December 2019, generating 252 MW of electricity, and the second phase began in September 2020, generating 245MW.

Topaz

This project is the third-largest solar farm in USA. This farm occupies a 15 square kilometer field called Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo County, California.

The farm positively impacts the surrounding community with $417 million in sales tax revenues, property taxes, induced spending, and employee wages.

Ivanpah

This solar farm is the fourth largest in the US, found on the base of Clark Mountain in California. The project cost $2.2 billion to build and has a capacity of 390 MW.

The farm launched in 2014 and was the largest solar farm in the world at the time, with over 300,000 panels installed.

Agua Caliente

This solar project is found in Arizona and occupies part of an agricultural land called the White Wing Ranch. This plot was selected because of very little transmission infrastructure and sunshine availability.

The project started in 2014 and generates 290 MW of energy. The overall cost of the project is $1.8 billion.

The first phase started in 2011 with a 39MW capacity. The second phase started in April 2012 with a 100 MW capacity, and the third phase started in July of the same year with a 147 MW generation capacity.

Crescent Dunes

This farm is found in Tonopah, Nye County, Nevada. The whole project occupies 1.600 public land acres managed by the state’s Bureau of Land Management.

The farm has a 30-year operational lifespan. Most solar panels last 20 to 30 years.5

The project launched in 2011 and has a 110 MW energy capacity.

It’s the first utility-scale solar farm in the United States with its own technology for energy storage technology.7 It cost $1 billion to construct the project.

What Are Solar Parks & How Do They Work?

Solar parks,1 commonly known as solar farms or photovoltaic power stations are extensive collections of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels that take energy from the sun and transform this energy into electricity.2

This electricity is collected by massive power grids that distribute it for customer consumption.

In most cases, the PV panels in solar parks are mounted to the ground instead of on roofs, as is common with small-scale solar arrays.

Solar Parks are grouped into two categories based on size.3 These categories are:

Utility Scale Solar Farms

These are massive land areas where solar panels have been placed far beyond the horizon. The PV panels are in their hundreds of thousands and are used to take in solar energy and generate electricity distributed through high-voltage power lines.

The current travels in these power lines to the grid, eventually sending it to people’s homes.

Most of these facilities work on power purchase agreements. In this case, individual businesses buy a specified electricity amount from either the generator or the utility.

These solar power facilities also run through other means like tax equity investments.

Community Solar Farms

These refer to small-scale facilities that give out approximately 5MW of electricity used by businesses and homes in the local community. The power generated from these solar farms is shared among participants in the program.

Residents who invest in the project get reduced electricity bills depending on the production amount and the number of residents.

These community solar farms work by placing the PV solar panels in a large open field in the neighborhood and in a place that receives maximum sunlight. The energy from the solar farm is then fed into a regional electricity grid.

Those who join the program will have their electricity bill reduced for the generated amount in relation to their home size.

The technology known as ‘virtual net metering’ allows these farms to run, whereby the local retail energy company credits the household bill for the electricity amount that the community solar farm generates. This is done in proportion to individual household energy loads.

Difference Between Community Solar Farms and Utility Solar Farms

Community solar farms are different from solar utility farms in that community solar is considered distributed generation resource (DER) or distributed energy. In community solar farms, the electricity produced powers households in a close range.

Therefore, the probability of losing power when the grid goes down is very low.

Utility solar farms have a different story altogether. More often than not, the one and only purpose of these farms is to provide energy for the entire region.

A lot goes into the construction of a solar farm. On average, building one will cost you $0.89 to $1.01 per watt.

In that case, you will incur an average cost of $890,000 to $1.01 million to build a 1 MW solar farm. Despite these high costs, you must know that installing solar systems cost $3.06 per watt.

Therefore, they are more expensive overall than solar farms. So it’s cheaper to install a solar farm than to have many residential homes having their own solar arrays.

Land Requirements

Solar farms use up a lot of land depending on the energy requirements. For instance, you will need about 6-8 acres for a 1MW solar farm.

The land takes into account the space between panel rows and other needed infrastructure. There’s so much to consider here, such as room for auxiliary devices, ie. Inverters, access room for maintenance and repairs, etc.

The Time It Takes To Build a Solar Farm

The time it will take you to build the solar farm depends on a lot of factors, such as the laborers working on it, the scale of the project, etc. Even so, this construction process can take as little as a couple of months. What takes time is the necessary planning permissions to build a large solar array on agricultural land.

These approvals and contracts are time-consuming and can take 3 to 5 years.

Additionally, the assembly time can be hindered by weather or unforeseeable circumstances. However, once all the systems are constructed and operational, your solar farm will need little upkeep, with repairs happening only three to four times a year.

The ROI You Will Obtain From the Solar Farm

A 1 MW solar farm can yield about $40,000 in annual revenue when you sell electricity. This, of course, puts into consideration that your farm will produce an annual average power of 1,460 MWh.

Utility-scale solar farms use wholesale electricity marketplaces to sell the electricity they generate for Purchase-Power Agreements.

Leasing Requirement for the Solar Farm
