When calculating flight transportation, 2 points should be added for short distances (inside the state), 6 points should be added for traveling to nearby states, and 20 points should be added when traveling by plane to another continent.10

The conversion factor used when calculating fuel usage is 19.6. The equation is as follows:
- The total amount of fuel x 19.6 = carbon emissions
Calculate monthly utilities
Utilities form part of the conventional carbon footprint questionnaire. Utility calculation formulas include the following:11
- Multiply kW hours by 0.994.
- Multiply natural gas usage by 11.7 (natural gas is calculated in therms)
- Multiply propane gallons by 13.
- Multiply fuel gallons by 19.6.
Examples related to these formulas are as follows:
- 67 hours x 0.994 = 66.60 pounds of carbon emissions
- 19 therms x 11.7 = 222.3 pounds of carbon emissions
- 3 gallons of propane x 13 = 39 pounds of carbon emissions
- 15 gallons of fuel x 19.6 = 294 pounds of carbon emissions
