Protecting Your Health Means Protecting the Planet

Neurological Specialists in Connecticut provides state-of-the-art medical care for patients suffering from a wide range of neurological disorders. With both general and specialized services, the team of experienced physicians and clinical experts focuses on establishing relationships, and educating patients about their condition while delivering treatment excellence.

This dedicated group of specialists is also committed to helping save the environment. As a partner with 8 Billion Trees and a supporter of other environmental groups, they’ve taken the initiative to offset the emissions generated by their practice, removing the greenhouse gases that are contributing to climate change.

By leading through example, they’re helping both people and the planet.

How Neurological Specialists Is Offsetting Emissions and Rebuilding Ecosystems

By using tree planting offsets, established through a specific process, the emissions removal process is maximized through the following steps:

Gathering Native Seed Species

To reestablish the complex and extremely diverse biome in the Amazon rainforest, the process begins by hand collecting native tree seed species. Planting trees is great, but invasive species can cause more harm than good, so it’s crucial to ensure that the seedlings that are planted will flourish and provide a strong foundation for the emerging ecosystem.

Once these trees have taken root, native germinations will become the norm, and the growth will continue… as Nature knows very well how to do.

Preparing Seeds in The Nursery

Once the seeds have been collected, they are stored in a very specific way to ensure their survival, and carefully cataloged to ensure genetic diversity among the plants that will germinate. At present, the team has roughly 100,000 seeds in the Cantao germplasm bank.

Creating Carbon Removing Fertilizer: Biochar

Not only will the seedlings restore the Amazon biome, the very fertilizer being used is crafted from an ancient practice that creates ‘black earth’ (terra petra), which is known now as biochar. By collecting dead biomass, like leaves and branches, pyrolysis (a deliberate practice of burning the biomass under the ground, or dirt) is used to create a nutrient rich soil additive.

And, the bonus is that biochar actually stores carbon, removing it from the atmosphere as well! Normally, biomass releases methane as it decomposes naturally. But this method eliminates that dangerous gas… all while providing the food that the native seedlings will need to grow.

Planting Seedlings In Devastated Areas

Once the seedlings have matured, they are moved to devastated areas of the Amazon rainforest, and planted during the season, which usually begins around November. Once planted, these seedlings will be monitored for growth over the next decades… and their carbon removal abilities will only increase as they age.

As partners with 8 Billion Trees, Neurological Specialists (NSPC) has made a commitment to offset greenhouse gases generated by the practice, so that you can feel good about choosing a provider who cares enough for the future of the planet to act now, to reverse the debilitating impact carbon emissions are having on all of our futures.
